TANDURR UM CULTURAL FESTIVAL | Festival, Cultural, River, Family, Victoria, Days, Meetings, Children | FATSILC, Fed. Aboriginal Torres Strait Island Languages and Culture
Victorian organisers are pleased with the results of this year's Tandurrum Cultural Festival, held recently at Baroona Farm, Echuca. Now in its second year, the festival has grown from the concept of a "Back to Grass Roots" celebration for every Koorie in Victoria, and was hosted by the Njernda Aboriginal Corporation.
Participants from all over the state came to Echuca and camped in family groups along the banks of the river. Over five days, workshops were held on a wide range of subjects, including traditional art, dance, oral language, story telling, basketmaking, bush food and bush craft.

Children swam in a supervised area of the river, while each day "Men's Meetings" and "Women's Meetings" were held to discuss issues relevant to the community.

With its emphasis on "Family and Community" the Festival also has provided an opportunity to pass to the children the message of the people's spiritual connection with the Land, our Mother.

The open days, which coincided with a long weekend in Victoria, were well attended by the public, who came
to see the Festival and shop from the stalls of the Aboriginal craftspeople. Next year's Festival will be returning to the 1994 site, Brambuck Living Cultural Centre, Hall's Gap, with organisers keen to continue improving and to ensure a great future for this innovative event.
