Commissioner warns of cuts

ATSIC Commissioner Tomasina Mani has warned FATSIL delegates that the Federation could face funding cuts in the order of 20°0, as a result of changes to Government policy.

Speaking at the June FATSIL Committee Meeting in Canberra, Commissioner Mam explained, "While no-one can predict the exact size of any cutbacks, I would ask all those affected by ATSIC funding to look at next year's budget with a reduction of 20% in, mind. We will know the final figure in. August," Commissioner Mam's comments follow speculation that the Federal Government is planning significant cuts to ATSIC's budget for the next financial year.

Should this eventuate. many organisations which rely on ATSIC for funding will also be affected. The cutbacks would mean a reduction in ATSIC administrative staff in each state and region.

There have been suggested amendments which, if accepted by the Government. will see the numbers of Regional Councillors reduced (eg. Brisbane Zone - South East Queensland reduced from 20 to 12).

Aboriginal Affairs Minister, John Herron has made no comment on future cutbacks. A spokesperson for his office stated that the story which appeared in the Canberra Times discussing ATSIC funding was purely speculative.
