In 1984 a group of six Gumbaynggirr elders gathered together at Kempsey to discuss concerns they felt over the loss of their language With the encouragement, of Christian Brother Steve Morelli. they began recording the language and taking it out to schools For many of the children this was the first time they had heard the indigenous Language spoken.

The group called themselves the Gumbaynggirr Language and Culture Group and of the six original members only one is still alive.

The name of the group was changed in line with the recommendations of the ATSILIP review and the founding member Maggie Morris is today patron of the Muurrbay Language Centre.
