These Aboriginal words were spoken by Elder Joan Moreton when Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders-in-Council, North Stradbroke Island, were recently joined by over 250 community members, local dignitaries and Elders from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, at a ceremony to inter the skeletal remains of their ancestors.

Taken from five different locations on the Island and nearby mainland, the remains had been held in the Queensland Museum from as early as 1858.

During the ceremony at the Myora Cemetery, Catholic priest Father Gerry Hefferan recited the Lord's Prayer in Jendairwal, the language of North Stradbroke Island.

The prayer had been recorded in the 1930s.

Elder Margaret Iselin says the community has little left of their language. "At the mission school at Myora our language was prohibited, but away from the school the grannies spoke the language fluently."

Island community members hope to continue language projects, producing educational posters and maps and maintaining awareness of language in their schools.

Our Father, who stop up there, Your name is good.
Come down to us.
We do here what they do up there. Today give us bread.
Forgive us this time,
Don't lead us to do wrong.
Take us away from bad.
You are great, all is yours
Forever.
