How does language work? How is my language structured? What happens to languages in contact? How can indigenous
languages be preserved? How are second languages learned? What models of bilingual education would suit the various indigenous language communities in Australia?

These questions are amongst the many that we ask and respond to in our Master of Arts and Postgraduate Dipoma in Applied Linguistcs which is offered by flexible delivery by the Department of Linguistics on the Clayton campus in Melbourne or by Distance Education. Students interested in our course come from all corners of Australia, including small outback communities, as well as from overseas.

The PgradDip, which can be done full time in one year or part time in two, consists of four core subjects:

•    General Linguistics
•    Applied Linguistics
•    Language in Society
•    Research Design in Applied Linguistics

The MA offers a further four elective subjects after the four core subjects have been completed. Present options include:

•    Discourse analysis
•    Bilingualism
•    Second language acquisition
•    Language and gender
•    Language in South East Asia and the Pacific

Future options will include

•    Aboriginal Linguistics
•    Literacy

On campus students can choose two research projects in lieu of core and elective subjects.
