ABC Radio's indigenous program, Speaking Out has introduced a segment on traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages as part of its new Sunday evening format.

Host of Speaking Out, Wayne Coolwell, says he wants to showcase traditional language to give his listeners an opportunity to experience the beauty of the spoken word.

Veronica Dobson (Eastern Arrernte), Lizzy Ellis (Ngaanyatjara) and Christobel Swan (Pintupi) from Central Australian language groups have shared stories about their life, culture and work, speaking first in their traditional tongue and following with an English translation.

There are plans to approach other indigenous groups around Australia to develop a comprehensive collection of traditional language. Speaking Out began in 1990 as a half-hour program broadcast on regional and metropolitan stations around Australia. It is now presented live from 9 to 10 p.m. on Sunday nights, and covers news, current affairs, art, music and cultural issues. The extended time slot also allows for talkback on indigenous matters.

Producer Karen Dorante is keen to hear from any indigenous groups who would like to contribute to the program through language, stories or feedback. Karen can be contacted on 07 33775102 or fax 07 3377 5567.
Or write to GPO Box 9994, Brisbane Qld. 4001.
