Language Access Initiatives Program

THE last edition of the Voice of the Land included more detail on the process for considering Language Access Initiatives submissions. All submissions for funding were assessed by the Regional Office and considered by ATSIC Regional Councils. Submissions were then forwarded to Canberra. A National Advisory Committee was formed to make recommendations on funding priorities to ATSIC at the national level. The inaugural Language Access Initiatives Program National Advisory Committee meeting was held in Canberra on 3 and 4 June 1999.

Committee members of the Language Access Initiatives Program National Advisory Committee included Preston Thomas (ATSIC Commissioner- Western Australia), John Delaney (ATSIC Commissioner-NSW), Jeanie Bell (Linguist), Dianne Hoskings (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies), Lester Coyne (FATSIL), Denise Karpany (FATSIL), Merv Franey (National Indigenous Media Association of Australia) and Colin Strand (representative from the ATSIC administrative arm).

ATSIC and the Committee members were very impressed with the high quality and quantity of applications. Overall 102 submissions totalling $29 million were received nationally.

ATSIC in Canberra is putting together the results of the meeting and ATSIC Regional Offices will advise applicants on the success of their submission shortly.
