A program which incorporates traditional songs and languages in achieving improved literacy outcomes for students, has been recognized by the Australian newspaper through its nationwide "Best School's" project.


In the category of 'schools that have implemented a striking innovation',Thursday Island High School was one of ten schools shortlisted for the prize.The program conducted by teachers Larry James and Anita Claasz,gives students the opportunity to study the traditional songs of the Islands, translate them to English and record them in both languages.

Results of literacy testing at the school have shown strong progress since the program was started in 2001.
