Proposed changes to the Act PDF Print E-mail
THE Registrar of Aboriginal Corporations has advised that a current revision of the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act I976 will recommend changes to allow the option of companies/organisations becoming members of parent organisations incorporated under this Act.

Currently, organisations such as FATSIL do not have the option of accepting corporations, companies or organisations as members.

The advice from the Registrar's Office is that:
The current Act defines an association as comprising not less than five adult Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander members. An Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander is an individual and not a company or an organisation. Therefore membership is restricted to individuals.

Should the recommended changes be passed, it is anticipated that the new Act will be in place early in 2005.Any changes to the rules of an organisation would then need to be passed by a vote of members at a Special or Annual General Meeting.
