I am an Australian of Indigenous descent - my wife Chrissie and I have four children. One of the issues my wife and I have concentrated on is the focus of our children's education. The more I become involved with Indigenous language issues, the more I believe language is the corner stone of Indigenous Identity for our youth. Language subjects during school years can be a means for our kids to gain/maintain a sense of their cultural identity and to continue an interest in their studies towards that all important education. With greater awareness of indigenous languages in this country, I believe that the level of recognition of Indigenous Australians by non-indigenous Australians will increase and as a result - our Indigenous culture will survive.
