Missiongu nyayanggangarri barra barra ngama
I’ll talk about when we went to the mission.

Yaw munda nyayanggangarri:: nanny goat nyandidmindani:: murndaj nyarrwani Garlu
Yeah. When we went there we took the nanny goats. We crossed over at Gaarlu [a creek not far from where the old Munja station was].

Garlu muna ngayanggangarri mangarri minjarl ngadmarangarri mindi murndaj nyarrwani … nanny goat
Where we went there to Gaarlu, was where we ate food [i.e. had lunch there the day before on the field trip] the place we crossed over with the goats.


mindinangga Barndijan.gu wul nyadmara Barndijan mindi Barndijan mejerri wul nyadmara
From there to Pantijan. We camped at Pantijan. We camped two nights at Pantijan.

mindinangga barij nyarrinyingarri Spring ganda Barndijan beny nyarrinyi manambad arrungu arrungu arrungu
From there when we go up at the spring at Pantijan we climbed up the jumpup higher and higher and higher.

mardug nyadmarangarri: warnarran marangi arrungu wuran dud budmara bilalerri mangarri bushes gardaba birrinyi nanny goat minjarl budmara minjarl nyadmara mangarri
When we walked it was late afternoon [by the time we reached] the top (of the jumpup). The old people cut trees. They cut bushes [i.e. leafy branches] and the nanny goats ate them (for) food, (then) we ate (our) food.

mardug nyadmangarri Wurawirri Wurawirri mayara wiyag nyarrwani
When we walked to Wurawirri, we went down to Wurawirri homestead [Wurawirri was an old station with a paperbark house. Its English name is Morrie Springs].

bug nyayangga Wurawirri mindi wulgu gardaba birrinyi wuran ganda irrminjal
We came out at this place Wurawirri to camp [for the night] They cut the bushes [i.e. leafy branches] from the trees.

irrminjal gardaba birrinyirndu:: yardgajin
They cut bushes (to make) like a yard for them.

Irrminjal nyalwa budba biyingga
They blocked up the old one [i.e the yard]

Awa minyingarri yard bilalerri bushes gardaba birrinyi budba birrinyi
Where the yard was open old people cut bushes and they blocked up the hole.

darawud budmara wularri birrinyi nannygoat
They went inside (the yard). The goats slept [in there].

mindinangga barij nyarrinyingarri jongarri malgana
From there when we got up to a big river [Glenil River]

dudba birrinyirndu wuran: irrminjal: minjarl budmara wularri birrinyi
they cut leafy branches from trees for them and they [the goats] ate them (then they) slept.

lewarran minjarl nyadmarangarri mangarri wularri birrinyingarri malngurrda
At midday while we had dinner they [the goats] slept in the shade.

ngabun.gu warriwarri birrinyi goyj budmarangarri jolioli budmaralu dambiragu …
When they drank they rushed to the water and then came back towards us to camp.

wularri nyarrinyingarri bandug wularri birrinyi
While we slept they [the goats] slept quietly.

Malngun Muwaalgulu …Muwaalgulu mindi… marlngarrinangga Glenil River malngun marlmarlnangga
Its name is Muwaalgulu. This (place) Muwaalgulu, its whiteman’s name is Glenil River.

mindi mejerri wul buyu mindi warrajal nyarrinyi munda malngana Molomolonyi
Two nights camp there. We threw a line into the river here at Molomolonyi [i.e. went fishing].

…wundugunga barij nyarrinyi nanny goat slowly abulannga mardug biyinggangarri
It was still dark when we got up and that’s when we kept going very slowly with the nanny goats.

mardug nyadmarangarri biliga wul nyarrinyi wularri nyarrinyi jewa irrminjal dudba birrinyi Auntie Rinjawola youngfela time and nyanangga gurndi bud bindingingani yard
When we walked we camped halfway and slept. The same way (as before) they cut leafy branches. Auntie Rinjawola, when she was young, and her husband yarded them [the goats] up.

ngoyba bijingi nanny goat
Let the goats have a spell (people said).

nguyan debarra binggangarri ngurr budmarerri wether
When they were dying of hunger, they would kill a wether [a castrated goat].

ngurr budmarerri minjarl nyadmara duj nyarrinyi mejerri wul
Those two young fella killed it and we ate it. We camped for two nights.

Well mindinangga ten days dambun Wurawirri to Mission
Well from there, it was ten days camp from Wurawirri Wurawirri to the Mission.

mardug budmarangarri bawad nyadmara beja warnarran … Nyininjidni
When we walked, we arrived at Nyininjidni [a big river a few days walk from Kunmunya mission] it was already late afternoon.

Nyininjidni from Nyininjidni Buronyi that dambun mission side now Nyininjidni From Nyininjidni (on to) Buronyi that place is near to the mission.
Nyininjidni, Buronyi, well (from) Buronyi (we) ended up [Buronyi is another river close to the mission. After camping at Buronyi it was only one day’s walk to the mission].

When we got up (climbed up right through the day) we came out at the mission in the late afternoon.

Mission langa wongay and burruru and missionary biyinggalu now manda nyodoni
At the mission the women, men and missionary came to us, they came to meet us.

Aerodromeda wali marduba nyidonalu wali ngay Auntie Rinjawola
At the aerodrome they were still coming up with them [the goats] my aunt Auntie Rinjawola.

amalngi bud bindiningani warnarran wali nyadaga bingga bush waynga yardda
They yarded them up in the late afternoon, still our (goats) they just went into only in the yard, (in our bush way).

walinga banyidjilani
Not yet, We still held them [in the yard].

duj walinga yard nyadagaranga wul beja budmarangarri
Not yet (time to let them go) they only camped in our yard, that where they had been already sleeping.

minjarl nyadmara Christmas mangarrri wulanbud nyadungurluni missionnangga yilala nyadungurluni:: …walinga :: ngawa bin finish
We ate our Christmas dinner. They gave us clothes from the mission. They gave (them) to us kids.

Nyayangga: yilala mardu ngadirani missionwula and nyarrun Ngarinyin yila budmara guyalu ben.gali ngarrima munda yilala guyalu Ngarinyin yilala budmaranyarrigu
We came. The kids from the mission walked (over) to us Ngarinyin kids. “You mob come here” they said. “Come here you Ngarinyin kids” they said to us.
And nyarrun yilala bin say “burray wa yuwana nyarrganurrugu.” And us kids said. “No. We don’t know you kids.”


And missionary … amara “guyalu Sunday schoolgu? Milimili any kind buna wulanbud liny buniyoni yilala gudaga” amarangarrigu missionary
And the missionary he said. “Are you children coming here to Sunday school? Your children can look at books and all sorts of things.” the missionary said to us.

And that yila buna barra budmara “balu, balu mangarriyu watermelon banana tomato minjarl ngadma” yilala ngadaga buju ngadmarangarri mangarri wiyaba ngadma malngana muna Mission Banana Springs Missionda
And the kids talked. “Come here, come here. There’s food out, watermelon, bananas, tomatoes. We’ll eat.” When our kids had finished (our) food we went down to the river at the mission, Banana Springs.

minjarl nyadmara Christmas mangarrri wulanbud nyadungurluni missionnangga yilala nyadungurluni:: …walinga :: ngawa bin finish
We ate our Christmas food. They gave us clothes from the mission. They gave (them) to us kids”. (We didn’t leave) Not yet (we stayed for a long time until) the rain finished.
ondalan way winyingarri mardug back again When there were no more clouds, we’d walk back again.


joli nyarrinyilu Wurawirri, Barnidijan mundawalu joli nyarrwani mundagunga walinga joli nyarrinyi dambun nyagagunga
We came back this way to Wurawirri, Pantijan and from there we came back down only to here and we still only returned to our country.

Beny nyarrinyi melbarra joli nyarrwanilu dambiragu Jilariba We climbed up [the jumpup at Wurawirri].
We came back down this way to our home Munja for good.
